Horse of Gold

September 8, 2016

Another sweltering, muggy, dirty day in Washington DC.  Already, at 8 o’clock in the morning, the air pollution alerts are up and old people are being warned to stay inside. (Surely they don’t mean ME!)  So, I’m out here sitting beneath a large, golden, art deco horse, sweating all over my sketch book, trying to remember how beautiful I though this sculpture seemed to me when I was about 12 years old and the towering steed was all shiny and brand new. It looks pretty dingy today, but maybe it's the weather.

Valor and Sacrifice framing the East entrance to the Arlington Memorial Bridge

There are two horse and human groups, Valor and Sacrifice framing the East entrance to the Arlington Memorial Bridge. They were sculpted by Leo Friedlander and together, they are entitled, The Arts of War." This morning, I am attempting to draw "Sacrifice."

I draw and try to watercolor…I'm  getting hotter and wetter…

Around 10:30 AM, military runners from the Pentagon begin to appear and jog past me wearing fatigues and carrying full body packs. I realize I am being a bit sexist here, but really, I hardly knew what to make of the two burley guys chatting about carb percentages in their food and good proteins choices.

"I'm considering becoming vegan…"
"Going full Paleo, myself."

Another testosterone laden pair was comparing sunscreens and skin side effects.

I don't know… I grew up when men drank Scotch with a splash and talked about their birdie on the 5th hole.

11: 30 hotter still… I'm going to find a nice bar and have an icy IPA for lunch.

A bit of history…

The orchestra was on a tethered barge and we sat on the steps. The best part was when The 1812 Overture was played.
My parents took us to a few of these. The orchestra was on a tethered barge and we sat on the steps. The best part was when The 1812 Overture was played. Thrilling!

I think those horses need to be cleaned. Remember when they whitewashed Paris in the early sixties? The dingy grey historical buildings became bright white. It was unbelievable! This needs to be done in so many places around the world. The buildings in Cairo are so filthy that they engender a feeling of sheer desperation.

I remember sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for concerts in the late sixties. Was it the same tethered barge?

Been there done that. 26 years in Brookmont and haven't moved far enough to avoid the Maryland weather. OH wait a minute ! It will change.

I remember those same things from the good old days.,Now we are old and the memories are so good !

Add, Glen Echo to that, with the fun house, pool, and merry go round.
